Susan John was hired as the SCHSPA Executive Director in January 2024.

Susan has a long history with SCHSPA and services to persons with IDD, Autism and Head and Spinal Cord Injuries in South Carolina. Susan first came to South Carolina in 1988 and began working for the Horry County Disabilities and Special Needs Board in supporting people to live independently in their communities. She advanced to various roles within the organization to include Director of Case Management, Director of Family Services and finally became the Executive Director in 2008. She served in that capacity until December 2023. While working, she served on the SCHSPA Board in various committee positions, was on the Board of Directors, and served as the Chair of the Association from 2018-2019. Susan is particularly committed to strengthening the rising leadership within the Provider network, which can be evidenced by her involvement with the Executive Leadership Academy. She too worked collaboratively with the Conference Planning Committee in coordinating and planning the annual statewide conference.

Susan is a graduate of the University of Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation and Human Development and she holds a master’s degree in Management and Leadership from Webster University. She was honored with the Debbie Burton Making a Difference Award in 2018.
