Initiatives and Collaborations

Tech First Initiative

SCHSPA, through a grant by The South Carolina Department of Disabilities & Special Needs is working to advance a Tech First Initiative in South Carolina with the intended long-range goal of advancing legislation to make South Carolina a Tech First State. This project seeks to address the unique challenges faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities, ASD and Head & Spinal Cord Injuries by providing them with access to tailored technological solutions. Through a combination of assistive technologies, specialized software, remote support and training programs, the goal is to maximize the use and benefits of enabling technology in South Carolina. This effort is being accomplished through a pilot project and grant process.

Nurse Practices Act

SCHSPA is working to facilitate changes to the Nurse Practices Act that could offer improved health outcomes for the consumers supported by our network of providers. Advocacy to utilize remote technology in the areas of nursing assessment is priority as continued legislative changes have expanded the use of tele-health. (House Bill 4159– The Tele-Health and Tele-medicine modernization act) ratified and signed by the Governor on March 11, 2024.

Legislation

SCHSPA works closely with our general assembly regarding legislation affecting our service delivery system, consumers and families. Yearly SCHSPA hosts a legislative breakfast as well as a legislative cocktail reception to have an opportunity to meet face to face with our legislators to discuss key issues facing our industry.

Disability Advocacy Day

SCHSPA collaborates with The South Carolina Partnership of Disability Organizations to coordinate Disability Advocacy Day at the State House. This event is generally held the first Tuesday each March. For additional information on this event please visit www.scpdo.org.
